Bringing a Friend’s Idea to Life: How We're Building Places

Great ideas often start in casual conversations and sometimes, those ideas are powerful enough to turn into products that could change how people connect.

A while ago, a good friend of mine reached out with a simple but meaningful idea:“What if there was an app that helped people find each other based on the places they’ve lived, schools they attended, and events they went to?”

The concept immediately resonated with me, and as a product manager, I knew it was something worth building. That idea became 'Places ' and I’ve had the privilege of leading the product journey to bring it to life.

🛠️ My Role in Building Places

While the original idea came from my friend, my responsibility has been translating that vision into a working, scalable product. Here’s what I’ve been driving so far:

  • Product definition: I took the raw idea and turned it into a structured Product Requirements Document (PRD), outlining features, user flows, and technical needs.

  • User Experience Design: I collaborated with our UI/UX designer to create detailed wireframes and Figma prototypes that visualize exactly how the app will work.

  • Engineering Coordination: I’m working closely with our development team to prioritize features, refine functionalities, and manage the build process.

  • Marketing & Growth Strategy: From brand positioning to go-to-market plans, early user acquisition ideas, and rollout strategy — I’m laying the foundation for how Places will enter and grow in the market.

It’s been an intense but rewarding journey of learning, building, and turning a friend’s vision into a tangible, testable product.

🌍 Why Places Matters

In fast-paced cities like Lagos, Enugu, and Abuja, it’s easy to lose touch with old friends, schoolmates, and people you once shared life experiences with. Places helps people rediscover those connections based on the places and memories that brought them together.

It’s a reconnection platform built around shared life stories ; starting with Nigeria.

🎯 What’s Next

We’re actively building the first version of Places, preparing for beta testing, and planning our market entry in key Nigerian cities.

This blog will document every step of the journey product milestones, lessons learned, challenges, and small wins. It’s an honest look at what it takes to turn an idea into a product people love.
